LG Sinha’s leap of faith makes July 27 historic

July 27, 2023

Srinagar:It had been thirty long years since the 8th Muharram procession was last allowed in the valley.

However, this time a determined Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, took a leap of faith, believing that it was time to embrace a new era of peace and inclusivity and allow Shia mourners to mourn in their traditional manner across Srinagar.

The decision to allow the 8th Muharram procession had not been an easy one for LG Sinha. He was well aware of the complex socio-political landscape of Kashmir, marked by historical grievances .

However, sources say he believed that ‘sometimes, to sow the seeds of peace, one must take bold step’. This decision aimed not only to honor the religious sentiments of the local shia community but also to show the world that the situation in Kashmir was changing for the better.

In the days leading up to the procession, the valley was abuzz with anticipation and anxiety. People from all walks of life, both within and outside Kashmir, closely monitored the situation. There was a palpable sense of hope that this event could be a turning point.

On the morning of the 8th Muharram, the traditional routes that had been deserted for decades were filled with mourners clad in black. Senior police and administration officers accompanied the procession, a show of solidarity and a commitment to ensure that the event proceeded peacefully.

As the procession wound its way through the streets, the atmosphere was somber and reflective. For many, it was an emotional moment, a time to remember the sacrifices.

LG Sinha’s leap of faith proved to be a triumph of peace. Despite the initial apprehensions, the procession passed off peacefully. There were no reports of violence or unrest. Instead, the event turned into a symbol of unity and understanding.

The officers who accompanied the procession did more than just ensuring security. They engaged with the mourners, offering them water and food, providing a sense of care and compassion. This act of kindness was deeply appreciated and helped bridge the gap between the administration and the people.

As news of the peaceful procession spread like wildfire, it sent a powerful message not only within Kashmir but also across the nation and beyond. The once volatile region was showing signs of positive change.

In the aftermath of the event, LG Sinha addressed the media. He spoke with conviction, emphasizing the importance of trust, dialogue, and empathy in achieving lasting peace. He acknowledged that this was just a beginning, and there were many challenges ahead. However, he was confident that with the support of the people Kashmir could blossom into a land of harmony and prosperity. “Feeling satisfied, mourners are now returning to their homes,” the LG said.
