Not just Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the entire cast of Manto deserves an applause

Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays the titular character in Manto and by all means, his performance captures the essence of the film. But not just Nawazuddin, Manto has some other actors who have done a splendid job.
1. Rasika Dugal
Rasika, who plays Safia Manto, has a doe-like innocence about her but in scenes where Manto is withering, it is Safia’s strength that holds him together and Rasika rises to the occasion. In a scene where she reads out an emotional letter, it’s impossible to not empathise with her.
2. Rajshri Deshpande
Rajshri Deshpande plays Ismat Chugtai and truly deserves the titular part if a biopic is made on Chugtai in the future. Deshpande plays Chugtai with such conviction that we get the impression that no one in this universe could stand as tall as Manto but her.
3. Tahir Raj Bhasin
Tahir Raj Bhasin plays Manto’s close friend Shyam and holds his own in scenes with Siddiqui. He is a star-in-the-making and becomes a factor in Manto’s decision to leave India for Pakistan.
4. Paresh Rawal & Tillotama Shome
The transition here is one of the smoothest moments of the film. As Nawaz’s Manto steps out for a smoke, a character from his story Sau Candlepower Ka Bulb appears to offer him a light. Paresh plays the pimp who gets in a violent fight with the woman he’s trying to solicit. And even though Paresh and Tillotama Shome appear for a just a few minutes, the story is strong enough to make you cringe.
5. Gurdas Maan
Maan appears in the story Khol Do where he is desperately looking for his daughter who has gone missing during the partition. His helpless gaze and his stumbling feet describe his state of mind within a few seconds. One can’t look away from the screen in Mann’s presence and it leaves one wondering why we don’t see more of him in Hindi cinema.
6. Ranveer Shorey & Divya Dutta
Ranveer Shorey and Divya Dutta appear in Manto’s Thanda Ghosht. By this time in the film, Manto is in turmoil after his move to Pakistan. Thanda Ghosht is facing an obscenity charge and Manto is arguing for himself in the court of law. Over one long scene in one room, we see Ranveer and Divya presenting the essence of Thanda Ghost and it is haunting in every way.
7. Rishi Kapoor
Rishi Kapoor plays a sleazy movie producer during Manto’s days in Bombay. Kapoor is here only for one scene but effectively communicates how film producers could be misers and lechers all at the same time.
8. Vinod Nagpal
Vinod Nagpal appears at a juncture when Manto is starting to slip into delusion, and appropriately enough, the story of Toba Tek Singh starts. Nagpal plays Bishan Singh, the protagonist of the story, who just wants to reside in his village but is being forcefully sent to India post partition. The state of this man is much like Manto’s. Vinod Nagpal captures the helplessness and stress of Bishan and leaves you feeling melancholic.
Apart from these actors, the film also features Javed Akhtar, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Bhanu Uday, Shashank Arora, Ila Arun, Purab Kohli and many others.

Samsung Galaxy Fold: A crease, a click, and it’s thick

The Kashmir Monitor

Published

on

Samsung Electronics Co.’s Galaxy Fold is a pricey, but promising device that kicks off a new phase of the smartphone industry.

The company held an event in New York City to let reporters and other members of media try out the gadget for the first time.Samsung announced the phone in February and it goes on sale April 26 at the wallet-stretching price of $1,980.

Samsung forecasts it will produce at least 1 million foldable phones this year. That’s a fraction of all the phones that the company shipped last year. Still, research firm Gartner Inc. expects the market will grow to 30 million units by 2023. Huawei Technologies Co., Xiaomi Corp., and Lenovo Group Ltd.’s Motorola unit are working on foldable phones. There’s no indication yet that Apple is working on a folding iPhone.

The Galaxy Fold has a 4.6-inch screen on the front, which makes it smaller than most modern smartphone screens. But it opens up to become a 7.3-inch tablet, letting users run three apps at once. It has half a terabyte of storage and 12 gigabytes of RAM, rivaling high-end laptops. It also has six cameras and a pair of batteries.

The device feels like a tablet when opened up. There’s a satisfying click sound for the hinge. A crease is noticeable, but it doesn’t get in the way of using it.

There’s spacing between two sides of the touchscreen keyboard so that typing with thumbs is comfortable.

When folded shut, the front-facing screen is small, and there is a noticeable gap above and below the display. The phone is also fairly thick when closed. It comes in silver, black, green and blue and pre-orders begin on Monday. The device will be available in the U.S. on the wireless networks of AT&T Inc. and T-Mobile US Inc.

Samsung is also developing a clamshell-like foldable phone and another one that folds outward, Bloomberg News reported last month. The company also envisions smartphones with rollable and stretchable displays, Samsung Executive Vice President Chung Eui-suk said in February.

Samsung spent eight years developing the Galaxy Fold. Still, there are questions about durability. Samsung is trying to remove a crease that appears on the protective film above the screen after it’s been folded about 10,000 times, Bloomberg News reported last month. The company has since released footage of machines repeatedly opening and closing the phone in what it dubbed an “extremity test” to assert its durability.

Mark Cerny Reveals Some PS5 Specifications and Teases a ‘Game Changer’

The Kashmir Monitor

Published

on

The PS5, PlayStation 5, or “next-gen console”, as Sony is now calling it, has had its specifications revealed. In conversation with Wired, PS4 systems architect Mark Cerny confirmed that the PS5 will have an AMD Ryzen CPU, Radeon Navi GPU, support for ray tracing, and a solid state drive (SSD) that he touted to be a “game changer”. This comes after an anonymous post from an alleged PS5 developer suggested a similar set of specifications earlier this week. However, with an SSD, we won’t be surprised to see a higher price point.

According to Cerny, the PS5 will feature a CPU based on the third-generation of AMD’s Ryzen line and contains eight cores of the company’s new 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture. As for the GPU, it would be a custom variant of the AMD Radeon Navi family with ray tracing support to boot. It will be backwards compatible with PS4 games as well.

Though for Cerny, the biggest improvement will be the addition of an SSD which he referred to as “a true game changer” and “the key to the next generation”.

“I have an SSD in my laptop, and when I want to change from Excel to Word I can wait 15 seconds,” he said while demonstrating load times of Spider-Man on PS4 Pro versus Spider-Man on a PS5 developer kit with the difference being 15 seconds versus 0.8 seconds according to Wired. Furthermore, the game world loaded faster, resulting in a more responsive camera as well.

While Sony isn’t giving details on the SSD specifications, Cerny hinted at the possibility of propriety tech at play.

“The raw read speed is important,” he said. “But so are the details of the I/O [input-output] mechanisms and the software stack that we put on top of them. I got a PlayStation 4 Pro and then I put in a SSD that cost as much as the PlayStation 4 Pro—it might be one-third faster.”

This lines up with previous leaks that have suggested the presence of an SSD or a regular hard drive with “some sort of NAND flash”. Though this could also imply a higher price tag with one leaker’s claims that the PS5 price would be around $499 (close to Rs. 35,000) and have a release date or March 2020 or November 2020.

Redmi Y3 India Launch Set for April 24; 32-Megapixel Selfie Camera, Large Battery Teased

The Kashmir Monitor

Published

on

Redmi Y3 India launch date has been confirmed. To recall, Xiaomi has been teasing the launch of a new smartphone in the Redmi Y-series that will come with a high-resolution front snapper for capturing better selfies. The company has now confirmed that the upcoming Redmi Y-series smartphone, tipped to be the Redmi Y3, will be launched on April 24 in India. Moreover, Xiaomi’s revelation on Twitter has also confirmed that the device will pack a 32-megapixel front camera that will let users capture selfies with more details, something Xiaomi is teasing with the “32MP Super Selfie” moniker. Other specifications as well as the price of the phone remain a mystery for now.

In a tweet sent out earlier today, the company divulged that the upcoming Redmi Y-series smartphone will be launched in India on April 24. The company has also sent out media invites, which states that the Redmi Y3’s launch event will kick off at 12:00pm IST. The accompanying hashtag “#32MPSuperSelfie” serves as an indication that the smartphone, heavily rumoured to be the Redmi Y3, will come equipped with a 32-megapixel front camera. The accompanying image shows a section of a smartphone’s front panel, ostensibly the Redmi Y3, with a waterdrop notch whose shape is quite similar to the one on the Redmi Note 7 ? 10,976 (Review) duo.

As for the sensor itself, it is being tipped that the Redmi Y3 might employ Samsung’s 32-megapixel ISOCELL Bright GD1 image sensor that was announced back in October last year. In a previous tweet, the company teased that the Redmi Y3 will also pack a large battery that will provide users with some relief from the woes of their smartphone dying out before the end of the day. There is no word on the battery capacity or support for fast charging, but rumours suggest that the Redmi Y3 might pack a 4,000mAh battery. However, this could turn out to be mere speculation, so do process this with a fair bit of scepticism.

The Redmi Y3 was recently spotted on the database of Wi-Fi Alliance, indicating that a launch is imminent. While the Wi-Fi certification did not reveal anything specific about the Redmi Y3’s internal hardware, it did confirm that the Redmi Y3 – carrying the model number M1810F6G – will run MIUI 10 based on Android Pie and will have support for Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n standards. Gadgets 360 will be at the Redmi Y3’s launch event later this month and will bring our first impressions and in-depth review soon.
