Guv, CS monitor flood management works: Secy PHE

Srinagar, Dec 22: Secretary of Public Health Engineering (PHE) Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) departments, Farooq Ahmad Shah Saturday the Governor led administration is keenly monitoring flood management works done in the State.

He said this while reviewing re-sectioning and ongoing dredging works in Hokersar, lake.

Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary said that the completion of the first phase of flood management will increase the capacity of managing floods by 60,000 cusecs.

“The Governor and the Chief Secretary are keenly monitoring flood management works and are very serious in increasing the capacity of flood channels to avert major tragedy in case of floods” Shah said.

“A long-term plan is being devised to chalk out a strategy to prevent 2014 like flood situation. For this Spain based company has been roped in which will submit a DPR by the end of this month,” he said.

The Secretary said that the work on two bridges at Sharifabad and Naidkhai by JKPCC will be completed by the end of March 2019, adding that the construction of these bridges will help in movement of waters in the spill channel.

The Secretary was informed that the re-sectioning of flood channel from Mehjoor Nagar Bridge to Tengpora is going on, while as a major portion of work on Tengpora to Sharifabad has also been completed.

Shah said I&FC is trying hard to get the re-sectioning and the dredging work done within six months and ensure early commencing of work on the second phase.

He informed that in phase-2 dredging and re-sectioning of Jehlum from Sopore to Baramulla will be started and the width of it will also be increased to 30 metres. The government has already earmarked funds for it, he added.
