Srinagar, March 15: The residents of Karnah tehsil of Kupwara district on third consecutive day staged a protest demonstration against the Governor’s administration for failing to construct a tunnel from Karnah to Kupwara.

Scores of the protestors while chanting anti-administration slogans assembled in Srinagar’s press colony and demanded the tunnel at the earliest.  “The roads from Kupwara to Karnah traverse through Sadna pass which is prone to avalanche, landslides, shooting stones and mud washes,” said one of the protestors.

“More than 200 casualties have been recorded so far from this death track. Every year, people become a victim of fatal accidents while passing through this road,” he added.

Another protester said that the same road becomes more deadly in winters as people are bound to travel through it frequently to get their livelihood stock from the main town.

Pertinently, the Karnah residents have been protesting in Srinagar from last three consecutive days as according to them they get disconnected with rest of the world for almost half of the year once the winter sets in Kashmir. But the tunnel has been their long pending demand.

They said the last incident that happened on the Karnah road was on March 11, 2019, just two days back, and that claimed the life of three young boys.”

“If the government is unable to meet our genuine demands, then we want the opening of Teetwal-Muzafarabad –Uri route as an alternate route so that we can easily travel through this route to the valley,” said another protesting resident.
