Srinagar, Jul 11: Several illegal constructions are coming up in old city’s Zainakadal area in connivance of concerned officials.

The local residents said that at least 15 illegal constructions are coming up illegally in Zainakadal, Aali Kadal, Wazapora and other adjoining areas.

“These constructions are being raised in connivance of Ward Officer concerned Manzoor Ahmad of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation,” a local resident wishing anonymity said.

He said that building permission norms had been ignored while allowing several constructions in these areas. “While those who have obtained permissions, the Ward Officer is unnecessary creating hindrance on one or the other excuse and not allowing the constructions,” another local resident said. “He is allowing constructions only if people pay him the bribe,” he added.

The local residents have appealed the SMC authorities to look into the matter. “Why should somebody pay him the bribe when he gets permission as per the rules? But the officer is allowing constructions if he is being paid the money. If somebody denies the money then he stops the constructions,” the locals said.

When contacted, Commissioner, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Riyaz Ahmad said that people should approach him if they have any such issues and assured that he will look into the matter.
