SRINAGAR, JUNE 03: The annual Urs of revered Sufi saint Mir Syed Ali Hamadani, popularly known as Shah-e-Hamadan, was observed with deep religious fervour across Kashmir valley today.

Thousands of devotees thronged the historic Khanqah-e-Moala shrine, nestled on the banks of River Jhelum in Srinagar’s old city, offering prayers and supplications throughout the day. Despite intermittent rain, the rush of devotees remained undeterred. Women in large numbers too participated in congregational prayers on the occasion. The shrine and its surroundings wore a festive look, with stalls by vendors and government departments set up for the visitors’ convenience.

Nightlong prayers (Shab Khwani) were held from last night till Tuesday morning, and religious scholars reflected on the saint’s teachings and his role in the spread of Islam in Kashmir. They highlighted the unique traditions of the Urs, including the chorus recitation of Persian and Kashmiri eulogies, the ‘Aurad-e-Fatiha’.

Shah-e-Hamadan, who arrived in Kashmir in 1384 A.D., is credited not only with providing spiritual guidance but also promoting Persian arts and crafts, laying the foundation for the Valley’s renowned handicraft, shawl, and carpet industries.

A devotee described his legacy as one that brought both spiritual awakening and economic upliftment to the region. “Owing to Shah-e-Hamadan’s spiritual influence, a spring of morality and Islam took root in Kashmir, transforming the region’s history. Alongside his religious impact, he ushered in an economic revolution by encouraging the people to embrace his teachings and adopt new skills and crafts,” he said.

The Urs was also observed with equal devotion at Khanqah Faiz Panah in Tral, South Kashmir.
