Srinagar, August 19: What initially looked like a chilling case of kidnapping has turned into something far darker in Ganderbal district. A girl has been arrested for murdering her younger sister and then trying to pass it off as an abduction — a deception that fooled many until the police uncovered the brutal truth.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, SSP Ganderbal Khalil Poswal said the 14-year-old victim’s body was recovered from Shepora two days ago. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was immediately formed, with forensic experts called in from Srinagar to assist in the probe.
At first, it was believed that the sisters had gone missing and could have been kidnapped, but strands of hair found in the hand of the deceased exposed signs of a violent struggle.
Technical evidence and CCTV footage further dismantled the kidnapping theory, forcing investigators to turn their attention to the elder sister. Under sustained questioning, she confessed.
Police said she admitted later that an argument spiralled into a fight. In a fit of rage, she struck her on the head with a rod that caused her death. She also attempted to hide the weapon, which has now been recovered.
While confirming the arrest, police have not yet disclosed the age of the accused.
“All relevant evidence has been collected and submitted before the magistrate, and the accused has been presented in court,” SSP Poswal told reporters.
He said that, at this stage, there is no evidence of the involvement of any other person in the crime. “The investigation is still ongoing, but so far it appears to be a case of a sudden rage leading to a tragic end,” he said.
The incident had sent shockwaves across Ganderbal district, with locals expressing disbelief over the involvement of an elder sister in the killing.
