Srinagar: The government in J&K has renamed the Public Health Engineering and Irrigation and Flood Control Department as ‘Jal Shakti’ department.

In an official order by General Administration Department issued on Friday, the government sanctioned the renaming and inclusion of the new name in the First Schedule of the J&K Government Business Rules.

“Sanction is hereby accorded to the renaming of Public Health Engineering/Irrigation and Flood Control Department   as “Jal Shakti Department” and its inclusion at Serial No. 27 in the First Schedule of the J&K Government Business Rules,” reads the order.

“Accordingly, the sub-entries (2) & (5) appearing at Serial no. 27 (Public Works), in the First Schedule of the J&K Government Business Rules, shall stand deleted,” it added.

Former J&K CM Omar Abdullah criticised the name changing by calling it “a waste of time.”

“Jal Shakti Department”. Can’t improve the quality or availability of clean drinking water so let’s just waste everyone’s time by playing the name change game. Glad to see the administration taking such far reaching decisions that will greatly improve people’s lives,” he tweeted.
