Srinagar, Mar 6: A non-local labourer was Friday killed and another injured after the duo was swept away by a snow avalanche that hit some under-construction power projects in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.

The avalanche hit Rayil area of Kangan.

In the incident, two non-local labourers working in the under-construction power projects were swept away by the snow avalanche.

Soon after the incident, a rescue operation was launched and both the labourers were rescued in critical conditions, reports said.

“However, one of them was declared brought dead by the doctors who attend on him,” they added.

The deceased was identified as Surinder Singh (48) of Pathankot. The injured Boby Singh (45) was referred to Srinagar hospital for further treatment.

The power projects, reports added, suffered massive damage in the avalanche, the quantum of which would be assessed later.

A police officer confirmed the death of the non-local labourer as well as injury to another and said that the snow mass struck the area at around 4:25 pm. He said a rescue operation was immediately launched.
