Srinagar, Jan 27: A complete shutdown was observed in Kupwara on Sunday against the 1994 massacre in which 27 civilians were killed in alleged army firing.
All shops and other business establishments in these areas remained closed while public transport is off the roads.
Joint Hurriyat Leadership comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik had called for a shutdown in the town which was supported by local traders’ bodies.
On 27 January 1994, the army allegedly massacred 27 people, including three policemen, in Kupwara town.
An eye witness said people offered congregational Fateh-a-Khawani for the martyrs at different places including Mazar-e Shuhada at Regipora in Kupwara.
Meanwhile, forces personnel have been deployed in strength to prevent any protest march by the people.
