Srinagar, Apr 12: In view of the poor mobile signals in many areas of Jammu and Kashmir, the state government has framed a team to facilitate the laying of optical fibre for improved telecom connectivity.
The five-member nodal team is to be chaired by Commissioner Secretary, Forest, Environment and Ecology Department, with Commissioner Secretaries, Roads and Buildings, and Power Development Department, along with Secretary Information Department and Divisional Commissioners as its members.
The team, as per an official order, will be serviced by the Information Technology department.
Frequent call drops, poor voice quality and slow internet speed are the general complaints of the mobile subscribers in Jammu and Kashmir.
Secretary Information Technology, Saugat Biswas told The Kashmir Monitor that the team will work on creating a framework for improved mobile connectivity in the state, especially in the areas where it remains weak.
Biswas said the optical fibre will be also placed in backward villages, which would improve the mobile connectivity and internet speed substantially.
The existing mobile network is copper-based, which cannot cope with predicted traffic, which is why mobile operators are increasingly turning to optical fibre.
A single optical fibre has more capacity than the entire radio spectrum, making it the ideal choice for telecommunication companies. In many cases, particularly cities, there has already been a huge investment in Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) networks.
Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited has already started optical fibre facility in some areas of Srinagar.
An official of the company told The Kashmir Monitor that optical fibre will improve the mobile connectivity scenario in the valley.
“There will be no more communication interruption during bad weather or flood like disaster. Optical fibre will have no effect of high temperature and will also work in sub-zero temperature,” the official said.
He said that the fibre connectivity will offer all connectivity services including landlines, DTH, Broad band, and mobile connectivity under one umbrella. “Right now Jio has started this service from Soura and will soon reach to every nook and corner of the valley,” he added.
