Srinagar, Jan 21: Residents of various Srinagar areas Monday faced inconvenience traversing water-logged lanes and roads as the faulty city drainage, yet again, gave in to a day’s rainfall.
Waterlogging was reported in several uptown areas including Jawahar Nagar, Bemina, Natipora, Padshahi Bagh, Barzulla, and Rambagh.
“How long do we have to wait for an efficient sewerage and drainage system? A day of rainfall hampers the movement of pedestrians particularly the children and the aged,” said Mohammad Altaf, a resident of Bemina.
Commercial locations including Lal Chowk, Residency road and Dalgate too reported pedestrians facing difficulties moving through inundated streets.
“This area is prone to water-logging and whenever it rains, the water enters my shop,” said a shopkeeper at Residency Road here.
Mayor, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Junaid Azim Mattu too was busy replying to the tweets of people complaining of waterlogging.
“Have asked MED (mechanical wing) to dispatch mobile dewatering unit in the area immediately,” he wrote.
Executive Engineer, SMC, Imtiyaz Ahmad, said they were doing their “best” to reach-out to the areas that were waterlogged.
Asked about the faulty drainage system, Ahmad said that they have already submitted the sewerage project to the World Bank. “We are at the final stage. For now, we use mobile water logging pumps in the city,” he said.
