Srinagar, Apr 5: A Virtual Private Network (VPN) claiming to enhance internet speed is making rounds on social media in Jammu & Kashmir, with people saying they even paid for the application but got nothing in return.

For the last two days, ‘VPN For JK’ went viral on social media sites, and was a big hit among netizens in Kashmir. Its description asks people to install the application and get 4G speed by making a payment of Rs 49.

While many made the payment, they found it was just a hoax and way of minting money.

“Not only me, many of my friends also tried it. However, we didn’t get high speed internet. We were fleeced,” said Nida Asif, from Kupwara.

While using a VPN was barred by authorities in Kashmir during the nearly six month communications lockdown, thousands of people across J&K had installed several known VPNs to access social media in the valley.

The government had come up with a white and black list of websites that users could and couldn’t access during the lockdown.

Police had to come up with statements threatening strict action against misuse of such VPNs before the government eventually lifted off all the restrictions on accessing internet. (Inputs from GNS)
