Srinagar, Jan 14: Skiers and snowboarders have gone gaga over the opening of the Z-Morh tunnel. The tunnel will make Sonamarg accessible throughout winter.
The 6.5-kilometer tunnel, which runs through the mountains of the Ganderbal district, has eliminated a significant barrier to accessing Sonamarg during winter months when heavy snowfall blocks the road.
For years, Sonmarg, known for its stunning landscapes and pristine slopes, has been cut off from the rest of Kashmir, limiting the tourism season.
However, with the Z-Morh Tunnel now operational, the region is set to see a surge in visitors, especially those eager to experience its renowned skiing and snowboarding opportunities.
Kashmir skiers and snowboarders said that Sonmarg’s landscape makes the destination another ideal spot for international-level winter sports.
“This is a game-changer for us. The landscape of Sonmarg is very diverse with enough crust and troughs. The slopes make the destination a favorite for skiing and snowboarding. We no longer have to worry about being cut off from Sonmarg. It’s a major boost for the winter sports community here,” said Mohammad Imran Bhat, a skier.
He said they are eagerly waiting for the start of winter sports in Sonmarg. “We will visit the destination and experiment with the slopes of Sonmarg. Sonmarg also receives heavy snowfalls like Gulmarg and we believe international athletes will try the slopes of Sonmarg,” Bhat said.
The non-local skiers who have been camping in Kashmir for the start of winter sports too said they will experience the slopes of Sonmarg.
“I have been to Sonmarg during autumn and I was fascinated with the landscape there. Winter sports like skiing, snowboarding, ice hockey, and snow marathons could be held there without any limitations. I believe the destination is going to be a winter hotspot of the country in coming years,” said Yash Mehta, a skier.
Pertinently, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also vouched that the Z- Morh tunnel will help develop Sonamarg as a winter sports destination.
He said the government will attempt to make Sonmarg a winter sports destination like Gulmarg in the coming five years.
