Srinagar: The ASMITA Pencak Silat State League 2025 (J&K) began on Saturday at the Indoor Sports Complex, Polo Ground Srinagar, with around 550 young women athletes from different districts of Jammu and Kashmir participating in the competition.
The league is being organised under the aegis of the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council as part of the ASMITA League initiative of the Sports Authority of India under the Khelo India programme. The event highlights the growing participation of women in sports across the Union Territory.
In recent years, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a steady rise in the number of women athletes participating in sports at both grassroots and competitive levels. Girls from urban as well as rural areas are actively taking part in various disciplines and contributing significantly to the medal tally of the region at national events.
Women athletes are increasingly making their presence felt in demanding sports such as martial arts, athletics, cycling and winter sports. Their achievements are helping change perceptions and strengthening the sporting culture across Jammu and Kashmir.
Officials said the growing participation reflects a positive shift towards gender equality in sports. With improved infrastructure, better training facilities and increased public support, women athletes are emerging as a strong force in the sporting landscape of the region.
The ASMITA Pencak Silat State League has provided an important platform for young athletes to showcase their talent and gain competitive exposure. The event features multiple age and weight categories.
Speaking on the occasion, Satish Sharma said the rising participation of women in sports reflects a changing social mindset.
“It is encouraging to see young girls from across J&K stepping forward and excelling in sports. Our women athletes are proving their strength and resilience even in physically demanding disciplines. The government remains committed to providing opportunities, infrastructure and training so that our daughters continue to shine and contribute to a healthier society,” he said.
Commissioner Secretary Youth Services and Sports Shahid Iqbal Choudhary said the growing presence of women athletes is strengthening the sports ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir.
“The increasing number of girls participating in competitive sports and their success at national events reflects the impact of sustained sports initiatives. Women athletes from J&K are inspiring the next generation and helping build a strong and inclusive sports culture,” he said.
The two-day competition will continue till March 15 and is expected to witness exciting bouts and impressive performances by women athletes representing districts from across Jammu and Kashmir.
