New Delhi: WhatsApp will no longer function on several older iPhone models starting June 1, 2025, as part of a system update that requires iOS 15.1 or later to run the messaging app. The decision, reported by update tracker WABetaInfo, is aimed at enhancing performance and introducing new features that are incompatible with outdated operating systems.

The move affects iPhones that cannot be upgraded beyond iOS 12.5.7, rendering them incompatible with WhatsApp. The devices confirmed to lose access include:

  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus

Although some reports also mention the iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, and the first-generation iPhone SE, these models can still run iOS 15.8.4. As long as users keep them updated to that version, WhatsApp will remain functional — at least until the next round of system requirement changes.

Android devices are not exempt either. WhatsApp will only continue to work on phones running Android 5.0 or later. Devices on earlier versions will also lose access unless updated.

Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, has emphasized that removing support for older systems allows the app to deliver a more secure and feature-rich experience. Users with unsupported devices have been given a five-month notice to either upgrade their software or switch to compatible hardware.

Originally scheduled for rollout on May 5, the update was slightly delayed. However, it will now take effect from June 1. iPhone users can check their current iOS version by going to Settings > General > About.
