Srinagar, Oct 7: Chairman Hurriyat Conference (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Sunday was placed under house arrest, a day ahead of the state goes to civic polls.

Mirwaiz took to his Twitter handle to lash out at the government for imposing curbs,“Under #House Arrest!Peculiar”Democratic”process of elections“gearing up “as huge deployment of forces, PSAs, incarcerations, house arrests, raids Curbs, internet bans gather momentum! Not to mention the unknown contestants and amused public ! What mockery of democracy is at display!,” he wrote on his Twitter handle.

First phase of civic polls in Jammu and Kashmir begins on Monday (today).

Later in the day, the Hurriyat (M) spokesman strongly denounced the house confinement of Mirwaiz and termed it “highly undemocratic and totally unjustified”.

According to the spokesman a heavy contingent of government forces during wee hours, arrived at Mirwaiz’s residence and placed him under house arrest.

The spokesman said that the policy of force being used against people to keep them away from the religious practices and gatherings exposes their repression further.

The Hurriyat (M) spokesman also condemned the fresh arrest spree launched across the length and breadth of Kashmir “aimed to instill fear and terror among the population”.

“Whenever election drama is enacted in Kashmir, it brings endless miseries and suffering for the people in the form of unending frisking at every nook and corner, cordons, searches as youth are arrested and lodged in police stations, massive crackdowns are being launched on the resistance leaders and huge deployment of forces is made to thrust the so called polls on people who have already rejected this military exercise,” the spokesman said.
