Terming the violence during farmers’ tractor rally on the Republic Day as ‘unfortunate’, President Ram Nath Kovind said that the government respects freedom of expression and protests.

“The government respects freedom of expression and protests. But what happened with the tricolour on Republic Day was very unfortunate. We need to respect law and order,” Kovind said during his address to a joint session of Parliament.

“The national flag and a holy day like Republic Day were insulted in the past few days. The Constitution that provides us freedom of expression, is the same Constitution that teaches us that law and rules have to be followed seriously,” he added.
