Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered a 100% tariff on all foreign-produced films, claiming that overseas incentives are luring filmmakers away and posing a national security threat. “Hollywood is being devastated… this is not just economic but also messaging and propaganda,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, declaring the U.S. film industry is “dying a very fast death.”

He directed the Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to immediately begin implementing the tariffs. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed on X, “We’re on it.”

It remains unclear whether the move targets international studios or U.S.-based companies producing films abroad.

The announcement follows China’s recent decision to scale back U.S. film imports, citing growing anti-American sentiment over Washington’s tariff hikes. Trump has already escalated tariffs on Chinese goods to 125% and declared a pause on global tariffs — except for China — until July.
