May 11 marks the first month of the 100-day Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir drive. It was on April 11 when Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha launched the ambitious initiative to rid Jammu and Kashmir of drugs and substance use. It was not just any other initiative of the government. It directly touched the society as a whole. People owe it to LG Sinha for feeling their pain. Never in the last 35 years has any leader been able to mobilize people to such a scale for a social cause. Drugs are spreading among youth like a virus. Our mothers are crying, our sisters are wailing, and our daughters are sobbing. From opioids to heroin and from ganja to cocaine, our youth are becoming drug zombies for real. Our enemies are smiling at our pain. Since security forces have crushed terror, our enemies have unleashed drugs to spoil the future generation. Like Punjab, the terror sponsors are now targeting youth to avenge their defeat. Our youth have proved their mettle across the globe. Walk into any top institution, and you will find a Kashmiri. Doctors, engineers, scientists, business leaders, journalists, you name any profession, and you will come across a Kashmiri lad. Our enemies could not endure our achievements. So they conspired to convert UT into another Udta Jammu and Kashmir. But LG Sinha came out of the syllabus. He stood like a rock to weather the storm. Leading from the front, his padyatras are striking terror into the hearts of the drug mafia. At the same time, the administration has become hyperactive in crushing drug syndicates. Even mosques, temples, and other religious places pray for the success of the Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir drive. Even those clerics who once were on the other side of the fence are seeking support for the drive. That shows the impact of the drive on the ground. Our peace is hard-earned. Our forces have made huge sacrifices for Jammu and Kashmir. The second phase is about consolidating gains. Youth form an important element in this journey. It is our prime responsibility to keep youth safe and foil enemies’ plans to create a generation of drug addicts. Calls are becoming shriller that the Nasha Mukt drive should go beyond 100 days. It should be fought till the last drug peddler and smuggler is brought to book. All eyes are on LG’s next step. We have played well so far, but we need to play outside the crease now. LG Sinha has emerged as a messiah for people. He has become the first head of state to be so popular. Like Tamil Nadu, the administration needs to set up an anti-drugs task force in each district to deal with such crimes. It should be modeled on SOG, and its task should be to treat the drug mafia as terrorists. We cannot lower the guard after covering so much ground. Iron is hot, and we should hit it hard.
