Srinagar, Jan 8: For a change, tourists are making a beeline to Kashmir to enjoy frozen water bodies in Chillai Kalan.
Frozen Dal Lake, a rare spectacle that mirrors European winter landscapes, has become an overnight sensation among tourists, thanks to local social media influencers who have flooded the internet with reels and pictures of its icy charm.
The mesmerizing visuals of the lake’s frozen surface, with boats encased in ice and snow-laden houseboats, have created a viral buzz, drawing tourists from around the world to witness the winter wonderland.
“Kashmir winter is the same as that of Switzerland or Scandinavia. It’s not just the visuals but the entire atmosphere. You feel like you’ve been transported to a European winter paradise, but it’s right here in India,” said Salam Qadir a tourist from Mumbai
The videos of people skating, playing, and taking picturesque photos on the ice have struck a chord with global audiences.
Many visitors are flocking to Kashmir specifically to walk on the frozen lake and capture the breathtaking scenery for themselves. “ I have seen videos of people walking over frozen lakes in Russia. I always wished to experience it and I immediately planned a trip to Kashmir soon after learning that Dal has completely frozen,” said Mukta Das, a traveler from Kolkatta.
Adding to the allure of Kashmir’s winter spectacle is the frozen Drung Waterfall in Tangmarg.
The waterfall transforms which has transformed into a stunning icy marvel with vertical sheets of ice and glistening icicles has become a must-visit spot for tourists looking to experience Kashmir’s frozen magic. “I have seen frozen waterfalls in documentaries, but witnessing it in real life is an entirely different experience,” shared Rahul Kumar, a tourist from Delhi who visited Drung.
This viral trend has significantly boosted winter tourism in the region with hotels and travel agencies have reported a surge in bookings.
“Most of the tourists who visit here request us to take them to the frozen area of Dal Lake. They walk over it and click pictures to post them on social media. It is a viral trend on Instagram,” said Parvez Ahmad, a shikarawala.
“We’ve seen a 30% increase in tourist arrivals this season, mainly because of the frozen Dal Lake. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many,” said Asif Ahmad Malik, a travel agent.
