TANGMARG, JANUARY 08: Kashmir, renowned for its snowy winters, is experiencing an unusual January twist, with sunny days replacing the expected snow. Despite forecasts of heavy snowfall on January 5, 6, and 7, the region has been basking in sunshine, leaving both locals and tourists surprised.

In Tangmarg, near the famous Gulmarg ski resort, locals are bewildered. “We were all prepared for snowfall, but it’s all sunshine. It doesn’t feel like January,” said a shopkeeper.

Tourists seeking snow adventures are adapting to the sunny slopes instead. “We were hoping for snow, but this sunny weather is equally beautiful,” shared a tourist from Delhi.

However, the lack of snow has raised concerns for farmers and orchard owners, who rely on snowfall for their crops and water needs. “Snow is crucial for our crops and water sources. We are worried and hope it arrives soon,” said farmers in Tangmarg.

Shopkeepers renting snow-related gear are also feeling the pinch. “Without snow, there’s no demand for our products. It’s affecting our income significantly,” said a group of shopkeepers.

Mehraj ud Din Dar, Assistant of Snow Safety Officer, emphasized the administration’s preparedness for potential avalanches once snow arrives. “We are always prepared for avalanches. Before fresh snowfall, we conduct controlled mining to destroy dangerous snow layers. We also maintain constant communication with those in high-risk areas through radio and other means to ensure safety,” he explained.

While the sunny weather brings unexpected joy to some, it also underscores the need for vigilance. Residents and tourists are advised to stay updated with weather reports and follow safety guidelines as the valley awaits the return of its winter wonderland.
