Srinagar: In a remarkable medical achievement, surgeons from the Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir, have successfully performed one of the most difficult and complex laparoscopic cholecystectomy reported globally, bringing international recognition to the region’s public healthcare system.
The challenging procedure was led by Dr Imtiaz Wani, Consultant Surgeon, currently posted at Government Gousia Hospital, Srinagar, and was carried out in collaboration with Dr Nadeem, Dr Javid, Dr Wasim, and Dr Umar. The surgery involved an exceptionally high-risk clinical scenario due to the presence of multiple rare vascular anomalies, making the procedure extremely demanding and technically complex.
The anesthesia team played a crucial role in the success of the surgery and comprised Dr Salim, Dr Saika Khan, and Dr Mudabir, supported by OT technicians Fayaz Fazili, Ishaq, Umar, and Farooq, whose coordinated efforts ensured patient safety throughout the procedure.
According to a detailed literature review cited from Wiley, a comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Google Scholar has identified this case as among one of the most dangerous laparoscopic cholecystectomy performed worldwide to date (CCR, July 1, 2025). Notably, this is the first reported case globally documenting the occurrence of four simultaneous high-risk vascular anomalies in a single patient undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Despite these extraordinary challenges, the surgical team adhered to safe and cautious operative principles, achieving a successful outcome.
The management and staff of Government Gousia Hospital have expressed deep gratitude to Medical Superintendent Dr Syed Arshad, CMO Srinagar Dr Tahir Sajad, and Director Dr Jehangir Bakshi for their invaluable moral and logistical support, which played a significant role in facilitating this landmark achievement.
This milestone stands as a testament to the expertise, dedication, and growing capabilities of the healthcare professionals in Jammu and Kashmir, reinforcing confidence in advanced surgical care within the public health sector.
