Jammu: In a major boost to rail connectivity in Kashmir, Northern Railway’s Jammu Division has approved an increase in the maximum permissible speed of trains on the Banihal–Qazigund single-line electrified section from 75 km/h to 100 km/h.

The decision is expected to significantly reduce travel time on the 17-kilometre stretch and enhance operational efficiency. Railway officials said the higher speed will improve train movement, increase line capacity and provide more time for maintenance activities, thereby strengthening overall safety standards.

The move is also expected to improve punctuality of train services operating up to Qazigund, Anantnag and Srinagar, reducing delays and ensuring smoother travel for passengers.

Officials stated that the speed enhancement is not only aimed at saving travel time but also at supporting the economic and social development of the Kashmir Valley by providing faster and more reliable rail connectivity.

Northern Railway reiterated its commitment to offering passengers a safe, fast and comfortable travel experience. The Jammu Division also appealed to passengers to follow all railway safety guidelines and cooperate in protecting railway property.

The upgraded speed limit marks another significant step towards modernising rail infrastructure and improving transportation services in the region.
