SKIMS conducts ‘grand round’ on ‘Stem Cell Harvest by Apheresis’

Srinagar, March 20: The Department of Blood Transfusion & Immunohematology (BT & IH), SKIMS, conducted a Grand Round Meeting on “Stem Cell Harvest by Apheresis:

Experience at Blood Transfusion Centre.

The session highlighted the Department’s experience in peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) collection, emphasizing its role in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for patients with hematological disorders.

The discussion also highlighted the increasing demand for stem cell therapy,

ongoing research to optimize collection efficiency.

Director SKIMS Prof. M Ashraf Ganie said the services highlighted and deliberated in grand round is unique to SKIMS, gives a wider perspective on vital clinical & specialised practices in SKIMS. He said specialised patient care practices available in SKIMS is hugely benefitting patients at large and SKIMS is in forefront to make advanced treatment options easily accessible. 

Dr Rumana Hameed, HOD Blood Transfusion Centre SKIMS emphasized that the Department of Blood Transfusion has been at the forefront of stem cell harvesting for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). New equipments that have been procured will certainly go a long way to enhance the services of the department.

The meeting concluded with a call for continued research collaborations, training

programs, and policy initiatives to strengthen the capacity of stem cell therapeutics at SKIMS.
