India skipper Shubman Gill has made a thunderous start to the 5-match Test series against England, amassing over 585 runs in just the first two Tests at Leeds and Birmingham. With three matches and six innings still to go, the in-form batter is well on track to rewrite cricketing history — and possibly surpass some of the most iconic records set by the legendary Sir Donald Bradman.
Most Runs in a Test Series as Captain:
Bradman set the benchmark with 810 runs during the 1936–37 Ashes series. Gill, currently at 585, needs just 225 more to eclipse that mark — a realistic goal given his current form.
Most Runs in a Single Test Series:
Another Bradman record — 974 runs in the 1930 Ashes — is under threat. Gill would need to add 390 runs in the remaining matches to break the nearly century-old milestone.
Fastest to 1000 Test Runs as Captain:
Bradman scored his first 1000 Test runs as captain in just 11 innings. With 585 runs in four innings already, Gill could challenge this record if he maintains his aggressive scoring rate.
Most Hundreds in a Single Test Series:
Bradman holds the record for most centuries in a series as captain, while West Indies legend Clyde Walcott scored a record five tons in a single series overall. Gill is just one century away from equaling Bradman’s captaincy tally and two from Walcott’s all-time best.
No player — not even Bradman — has ever scored 1000 runs in a single 5-match Test series. But with his current pace and form, Shubman Gill has a historic shot at becoming the first to do so by the end of the England series.
