Satish Sharma, Shahid Iqbal Choudhary Appreciate ASMITA Pencak Silat League

Srinagar: Satish Sharma and Commissioner Secretary Youth Services and Sports Shahid Iqbal Choudhary on Saturday appreciated the successful organisation of the ASMITA Pencak Silat State League 2025 (J&K), which commenced at the Indoor Sports Complex, Polo Ground Srinagar with participation of around 550 young women athletes from various districts of Jammu and Kashmir.
The league is being organised under the aegis of the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council as part of the ASMITA League initiative of the Sports Authority of India under the Khelo India programme, highlighting the growing participation of women in sports across the Union Territory.
Over the past few years, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a steady rise in the number of women athletes taking up sports at both grassroots and competitive levels. Girls from urban as well as rural areas are increasingly participating in various disciplines and contributing significantly to the region’s medal tally at national competitions.
Women athletes are also making their presence felt in physically demanding sports such as martial arts, athletics, cycling and winter sports. Their achievements are helping reshape perceptions and strengthen the sporting culture across the Union Territory.
Officials said the increasing participation reflects a positive shift towards greater gender equality in sports. With improved infrastructure, better training facilities and growing public support, women athletes are emerging as a strong force in the sporting landscape of Jammu and Kashmir.
The ASMITA Pencak Silat State League is providing an important platform for young athletes to showcase their talent and gain competitive exposure at the state level. The event features multiple age and weight categories.
Speaking on the occasion, Satish Sharma said the growing participation of women in sports reflects a changing social mindset.
“It is encouraging to see young girls from across J&K stepping forward and excelling in sports. Our women athletes are proving their strength and resilience even in physically demanding disciplines. The government remains committed to providing opportunities, infrastructure and training so that our daughters continue to shine and contribute to a healthier society,” he said.
Commissioner Secretary Youth Services and Sports Shahid Iqbal Choudhary said the increasing presence of women athletes is strengthening the sports ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir.
“The rising number of girls participating in competitive sports and their success at national events reflects the impact of sustained sports initiatives. Women athletes from J&K are inspiring the next generation and helping build a strong and inclusive sports culture,” he said.
The two-day competition will continue till March 15 and is expected to witness exciting bouts and impressive performances by women athletes representing districts from across Jammu and Kashmir.
