Russian skier dies in Gulmarg,4others rescued

Srinagar, Feb 16: A Russian skier was killed while four others were rescued after they came under a snow avalanche in world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir district of Gulmarg on Friday, a police spokesman said Friday afternoon.
The avalanche occurred near the second phase of the gondola service on the Affarwat peak in Gulmarg, trapping a group of Russian skiers. While 30 year old skier StanisLav died in the accident, others were rescued Chief Executive Officer Gulmarg Development Authority Balki told The Kashmir Monitor.
Balki, while addressing media persons, claimed that the Russian skiers didn’t pay heed to the warning. “We warned them before they went up but they ignored it and still went ahead,” he said.
He said that a group of over six skiers went ahead despite the warning and came under an avalanche at HapatKhud.
“One Russian skier has come under avalanche in Gulmarg and died on spot. 04 more skiers of the group rescued,” Jammu and Kashmir Police too tweeted.
The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA)had issued avalanche warning in north Kashmir, including Gulmarg for 24 hours Thursday evening.
On January 8, a skier from Sweden was killed while another was rescued in Gulmarg.
