Srinagar, Aug 20:  Jammu and Kashmir government has set December 2025 deadline for 100% coverage of its departments under the rooftop solar program.

Data accessed by The Kashmir Monitor revealed that  3,850 government departments have already been brought under solar power initiatives till now.

As many as 22,494 government buildings are to be equipped with rooftop solar in a phased manner in Jammu and Kashmir.

Around 04 MW of rooftop solar power plants are being installed on government buildings across Jammu and Kashmir.

The initiative is expected to reduce the carbon footprint of government operations and promote sustainability across various sectors.

The solarization project, being rolled out in phases, is aligned with the government’s broader commitment to increase the use of clean energy and meet its climate goals.

Dr P R Dhar, Chief Executive Officer of Jammu and Kashmir Energy Development Agency (JAKEDA) told The Kashmir Monitor that the rooftop solar programme is in progress and the department is working to achieve the target as soon as possible.

“We have set December 2025 as the deadline for the completion of the project. The motive behind this project is to endorse and motivate people for sustainable energy. Rooftop solar plants have been a success for us and the initiative has been going on in various districts for years,” he said.

Earlier this year, the Jammu and Kashmir government made it mandatory for all its departments to install solar power panels.

This initiative has been taken to address the mounting expenditure on power dues incurred by various government departments.

Last month the Jammu and Kashmir administration approved a Rs 400 crore project under which grid-tier rooftop solar power systems will be installed on all government buildings in the union territory.

Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo had called for the identification of all the buildings fit for installation and directed that all the government buildings in Jammu and Kashmir be covered under the rooftop solar program.

He even asked for the appointment of nodal officers at both J&K and district levels for its smooth implementation here.
