Rajnath to address RS on situation at Ladakh border

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will make a statement in Rajya Sabha to give an update on the current situation at the eastern Ladakh border where India and China have been engaged in a bitter standoff since last year.

Several rounds of talks and efforts at disengagement over the past months have failed to make any headway.

Meanwhile, the Chinese defence ministry on Wednesday said the frontline troops of China and India at the south and north banks of the Pangong Lake in eastern Ladakh have started “synchronised and organised” disengagement. This is being seen as a forward movement in the overall disengagement process to defuse the over nine-month border standoff.

Chinas statement gains further significance ahead of Rajnath Singhs statement in Parliament today. Indian defence and military establishment did not refute the Chinese defence ministry’s statement on the developments in the northern and southern banks of Pangong lake, an area that witnessed major face-offs since the row erupted on May 5.
