Srinagar, Oct 14: A non-local driver was shot dead and the truck he drove set ablaze by suspected militants in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Monday, the day government restored postpaid mobile telephony across Kashmir after 71 days.
A police official identified the slain trucker as Sharif Khan, from Rajasthan, who had gone to the village to get a truckload of apples for transporting the same outside Kashmir.
“At 7: 30 pm, 5 to 6 militants shot in the air to disperse the locals at Sindhu-Shirmal and then hijacked the truck and at a certain distance away shot the driver and set the truck ablaze,” the official said.
He added that the trucker was transporting the apples of a local grower (name withheld) of SindhuShirmal.
Soon after, forces cordoned off the area and made attempts to apprehend them.
“We have got the reports that a non-local driver was shot dead at Sindhu-Shirmal and the truck was set ablaze. We are ascertaining the details,” ADGP Law and Order, Muneer Khan told The Kashmir Monitor.
DC Shopian, Yasin Chowdhary confirmed the incident and the identity of the slain trucker.
