Srinagar, August 1: New UPI guidelines issued by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) will take effect from Friday, August 1, across all platforms like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. These changes aim to enhance user experience and curb fraud by easing pressure on systems during peak hours.
As per the new rules, UPI users can now check their bank balance up to 50 times a day. However, apps can restrict or delay balance enquiry requests during peak load times. Going forward, users will also see their account balance displayed with every transaction.
To reduce strain on API systems, auto-debit payments—used for subscriptions or bill payments—will be processed only during non-peak hours: before 10 am, between 1 pm and 5 pm, and after 9:30 pm. If a payment fails, the system will retry; after multiple failures, the transaction will be cancelled.
Users will also be able to view a list of banks linked to their mobile number, but only up to 25 times a day. These checks must be initiated manually by selecting the bank from within the UPI app.
Another key update: during busy hours when transaction issues are common, any payment stuck in a “pending” state will now be updated within seconds. To prevent server overload, users can check the payment status only three times, with at least a 90-second gap between each attempt.
