Srinagar: Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda on Thursday reviewed the progress of construction and operationalisation of AIIMS Awantipora in south Kashmir, directing officials to expedite the remaining works and ensure early commencement of services.
During the review meeting, Nadda assessed infrastructure development, procurement of medical equipment, recruitment of faculty and staff, and preparedness for launching medical and academic activities.
He was informed that all major buildings have been completed, while the remaining construction works are being taken up in phases. Appreciating the efforts of CPWD and other stakeholders in completing the major infrastructure despite challenging terrain and other constraints, Nadda directed the concerned agencies to complete the remaining works by March 2027.
The Union Minister stressed the need for close coordination between HITES and the AIIMS administration to expedite procurement of medical equipment, laboratory instruments and furniture. Procurement approval has been conveyed for 180 medical equipment items worth Rs 59.41 crore, with Notices of Award issued for 140 items.
Nadda directed officials to ensure that all essential arrangements, including diagnostic facilities, equipment and manpower, are completed well in advance.
The OPD services at AIIMS Awantipora are targeted to commence before December 2026, while IPD services are proposed to begin in July 2027, subject to completion of the required infrastructure and operational arrangements.
Academic activities, including MBBS classes, are also proposed to commence during the 2027–28 academic session, beginning June–July 2027.
Reviewing the recruitment process, the Minister called for expediting appointments of qualified faculty and non-faculty staff. The Ministry has approved engagement of 652 essential manpower positions for OPD and related services, including 150 security personnel.
He also reviewed campus security, transport connectivity and other institutional support arrangements, stressing effective coordination among AIIMS Awantipora, CPWD, HITES and the local administration.
Nadda said timely completion and operationalisation of AIIMS Awantipora would expand access to quality tertiary healthcare and specialised medical services in Jammu and Kashmir, besides strengthening medical education and healthcare capacity in the region.
