Srinagar, July 13: Two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers were killed and another was injured in a militant attack in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Friday.

Militants fired upon CRPF men of 96 battalion at Achabal, Anantnag, nearly 65 kms from Srinagar, resulting in injuries to three men.

“The CRPF men along with police were on law and order duty during which unknown militants opened fire at around 11 am resulting in injuries to three personnel. They were evacuated to hospital, however, two of the injured troopers succumbed to their injuries,” a security officer said.

Soon after the incident, the area was cordoned by the forces to trace the militants involved in the attack.

Later in the day, militant outfit Lashkar e Toiba (LeT) claimed responsibility for the attack.

“…cadres of the outfit attacked the convoy of CRPF ROP at Achabal Chowk in which two have been killed including an officer and several others injured,” the spokesperson of the outfit Abdullah Ghaznavi said in a statement issued emailed to local media.

The attack took place on a day Kashmir was observing a complete shutdown to observe Martyrs Day.

The call for the shutdown was given by Kashmir separatists. Restrictions have also been imposed in parts in Srinagar to ensure peace. The day is also observed as a public holiday in the strife torn state

On this day, 22 men were shot dead by soldiers of Kashmir’s Dogra ruler outside the Central Jail in Srinagar on July 13, 1931.
