Militant toll two: Ganderbal gunfight enters Day 4

Srinagar, Oct 1: The encounter between militants and security forces in the upper reaches of Kangan in Ganderbal district continued for fourth day on Tuesday even as forces claimed to have killed one more militant, whose identity could not be ascertained.

With it, the number of militants killed in the ongoing encounter, so far has risen to two.

According to reports, the four day long encounter started on Saturday, after security forces launched an operation against suspected militants, hiding in forest region of Gangabal, near Naranag hamlet of Kangan block in Ganderbal district, which entered into fourth day on Tuesday.

The area had been cordoned off by a joint team of 24 RR and SOG of J&K Police on Saturday, after security forces received an input about the presence of half a dozen militants in the area. Subsequently a contact was established with the militants, resulting in a fierce encounter and exchange of heavy firing between the sides.

Giving details, a police spokesperson too confirmed killing of another militant

“Incriminating materials including arms & ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. From the incriminating materials recovered, it is understood that the killed militants were from Pakistan.  Identities and affiliation of the killed militants is being ascertained,” the spokesperson said.
