Militant killed, girl injured in Budgam shootout

Srinagar, Mar 25: A militant was killed and a teenage girl sustained bullet wounds in a pre-dawn brief ‘encounter’ on Sunday, police said.

“On specific input regarding presence of militants, Budgam police, 53 RR and CRPF launched a cordon-and-search-operation in Khan Mohalla, Arizal of Beerwah Budgam on Sunday,” a police spokesman said.

“During the searches, at around 3:00 am militants tried to flee and came out of a house and fired indiscriminately on forces. In retaliation one militant was killed,” the spokesman said.

The slain militant was identified as Shafat Hussain Wani son of Late Mohammad Akbar Wani, a resident of Wagoora, Kreeri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

“A female teenager received injury in her thigh while the hiding militants were trying to escape firing indiscriminately,” the police spokesman claimed.

Sources identified the injured girl as 17-year-old Humaira daughter of Mohammed Maqbool Khan.

The police spokesman further said that she was evacuated to THE hospital by the police for medical treatment and her condition was reported to be stable.

Shafat, the slain militant had done BA-B.ED and was working as a teacher in a private educational institute before joining militant ranks last year.

As soon as the news about him dying in the encounter reached to his native village, people in large numbers started visiting his home, amid pro-freedom sloganeering in the area.

Later the slain militant’s body was taken to Eidgah amid massive protests and slogans and laid to rest.

Police as well as paramilitary CRPF was deployed in large numbers in the area as a precautionary measure to maintain ‘law and order’.

Meanwhile, authorities also suspended internet services in parts of Baramulla soon after news of Shafat’s killing spread.

Police sources said that Shafat was believed to be associated with Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit.

 

Bodies of two JeM militants buried

Srinagar, Mar 25: Two Jaish-e-Mohammad militants of Pakistan who were killed in Anantnag district were buried at Gantamullah area of Sheeri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district Saturday night – where foreign militants are laid to rest in the Valley.

Official sources told that the bodies of the slain militants were buried with the help of local Auqaf committee at Gantmullah area of Sheeri late Saturday night.

A police officer confirmed that both the foreign militants were buried in the area.

The slain militants were killed in a brief gunfight on the intervening night of March 23/24 at Shestergam area of Dooru in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
