Meta has officially rolled out direct messaging (DM) on Threads, its Instagram-linked social platform, addressing one of the most requested features since the app’s launch in 2023. Starting the first week of July, users can now chat privately within Threads without switching over to Instagram.

Initially, Threads DMs offer basic functions: one-on-one chats, emoji reactions, spam reporting, and mute options. Advanced features like group chats and message filters are expected in future updates.

For now, the DM feature is limited to users aged 18+, and not available in Japan, Australia, the UK, or the EU. Messaging is currently restricted to mutual followers or Instagram connections.

However, Threads DMs will not have end-to-end encryption. Meta spokesperson Alec Booker confirmed the feature lacks the privacy protections offered by WhatsApp or X (formerly Twitter), but said the platform will continue developing its messaging tools based on community input.

How to Use Threads DMs:
Tap the envelope icon at the bottom of the app, then use the pencil icon in the top-right corner to compose a message.

Meta is also introducing a new feature called Highlighter, which showcases standout posts that prompt thoughtful conversations. Additionally, Meta is testing new login options in Europe — including Facebook login and Threads-only accounts — and is exploring web browsing access without login.
