JAMMU, MAY 15: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday met with families of those killed in Pakistani shelling in Mendhar, Jammu and Kashmir, between May 7 and 10. She urged the central government to pursue a lasting ceasefire and restore peace along the border.

Expressing condolences to the bereaved families, Mehbooba demanded increased financial aid and employment support. “The current compensation of ₹10 lakh is insufficient. It must be significantly enhanced,” she said, adding that those whose homes were destroyed should receive at least ₹50 lakh in relief. On the broader India-Pakistan situation, she emphasized the urgent need to break the cycle of hostility. “This kind of atmosphere must come to an end. What we truly need is a permanent cessation of hostilities. Normalcy and peace must return to the borders,” she said.

Highlighting the vulnerability of border residents during shelling, Mehbooba pressed for the construction of civilian bunkers. “The current security infrastructure is inadequate for locals. People have nowhere to seek refuge during attacks. The government must build proper bunkers for them,” she insisted. She further urged swift government action on rehabilitation: “Most bunkers are designated for security personnel. Authorities must expedite construction of civilian bunkers, repair damaged homes, and provide full and enhanced compensation. Every family that has suffered a loss should be given a government job.”

When asked about the recent celebrations of Operation Sindoor, Mehbooba responded pointedly, “What can I say about that? There should never have been a war. Our people have died, homes have been destroyed, and property lost. Those celebrating from TV studios have no idea of the suffering here.” Reiterating her call for peace, she concluded, “A sustained ceasefire is essential, and every affected family must be adequately compensated.” (Agencies)
