Srinagar, Aug 12: A youth was killed and two others injured in a mysterious blast at TosaMaidan in Khag area of Budgam district.

The injured were identified as Mudasir Ahmad Ganie, Waseem Ahmad Ganie and WajidBashir Ahanger, all residents ZagooKharein area of Khansahab Budgam, a police official said.

They were shifted to JVC Hospital, Bemina, for treatment, he added.

Wajid was eventually shifted to SKIMS, Soura where he succumbed to his injuries

SSP Budgam Tejinder Singh also confirmed the death of the youth and said that police has taken cognizance of the incident.

Deputy Commissioner Budgam, Sehrish Asgar, as per GNS, said that a fresh advisory has been issued and people are requested not to fiddle with any shell or other suspected object if they find the same.

“We made announcements in local mosques and other places adjoining TosaMaidan and have urged people not to touch or fiddle with any suspected object in the area,” DC said.

The deputy commissioner said that a fresh clean-up drive will be taken up soon to see for any explosive devices in the area.

The deputy commissioner said that people would not be allowed to venture into the areas where the possibility of unexploded shells is more till the cleanup drive was complete.

TosaMaidan is a 3,000-acre meadow known for being littered with unexploded shells. That reputation is an unfortunate side effect of the Indian army and air force using TosaMaidan as a heavy artillery firing range for as many as 50 years.

The residents of surrounding villages — and their cattle — often come into contact with these shells, which explode on impact, killing or seriously maiming their victims.
