Kashmir-born Vikram Misri is new foreign secretary

New Delhi, June 28: Kashmir-born Vikram Misri has been appointed as the new Foreign Secretary of India. 

He succeeds Vinay Mohan Kwatra who was given a six-month extension in March this year.

Born on November 7, 1964, in Srinagar, Misri, a 1989 batch Indian Foreign Service officer, has served in various key positions, including Deputy NSA, ambassador to China, Spain, and Myanmar, and Private Secretary to multiple Prime Ministers.

The government has announced the name of Vikram Misri as the new Foreign Secretary. Misri has been appointed to the post with effect from July 15, an official order stated today.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Misri, Deputy NSA in the National Security Council Secretariat, to the post of Foreign Secretary with effect from July 15, said the order issued by the Personnel Ministry. The order also approved the curtailment of Misri’s tenure as the Deputy NSA.

Vikram Misri has held important positions in the past. He has served in both the External Affairs Ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office.

Misri was the ambassador to China from January 2019 to December 2021. He was also the ambassador to Spain and Myanmar.

He was appointed as the Deputy National Security Adviser (NSA) on January 1, 2022.

Misri was the private secretary to Prime Ministers Inder Kumar Gujral, Manmohan Singh, and Narendra Modi.

Misri has also served in various Indian Missions in Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America.

He was Under Secretary in the Office of the External Affairs Minister of India during I.K. Gujral’s government from November 1996 to April 1997.

Later, he served as the Private Secretary to I.K. Gujral from April 1997 to March 1998.

He served as Under Secretary/Deputy Secretary for the Pakistan Desk in the Ministry of External Affairs from April 1998 to August 2000.

Misri was the Director of the Office of the External Affairs Minister of India under the then foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee from November 2006 to September 2008. He was the Joint Secretary in the PMO from March 2012 to October 2012 and later was the Private Secretary to the then Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh from October 2012 to May 2014.
