Srinagar, Dec 05: Jammu and Kashmir has recorded over 72% deficit rainfall in 2 months.
Despite frequent snowfall in higher reaches for the last two weeks, Meteorological Department Kashmir said the deficiency has gone up to 72 percent from October 01, 2024, to December 04, 2024.
According to MeT data, against the normal precipitation of 70.5 mm, J&K has recorded a rainfall of only 19.9 mm during the last two months period.
The data reveals that the majority of the stations across J&K recorded deficient rainfall between 60 percent to 99 percent during the period.
Srinagar, the summer capital of J&K, has recorded a deficient rainfall of 82 percent while Shopian in South Kashmir has recorded the highest deficit of 96 percent during the last over two months.
As per the data, Samba is the only station with above-normal precipitation. It has recorded 47 mm, marking an increase of 160 percent during the period.
Kulgam, Budgam and Poonch stations in J&K have recorded a deficit rainfall of above 90 percent while Anantnag, Kishtwar, Pulwama, and Udhampur have recorded a deficit of above 80 percent.
As per the data, Baramulla, Ganderbal, and Ramban have recorded a deficit rainfall of above 70 percent.
Meanwhile, Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, has recorded the season’s coldest night again at minus 2.1 degrees Celsius while Shopian in South Kashmir was the coldest place at minus 5.5 degrees Celsius.
The Meteorological department has shared the details of the minimum temperature, revealing that Srinagar has recorded a low of minus 2.1 degrees Celsius, which is the lowest of the season so far. A similar temperature was recorded in J&K’s summer capital on November 28.
Furthermore, Shopian was the coldest place in Kashmir where the mercury settled at minus 5.5 degrees Celsius.
Pahalgam, a famous tourist destination, recorded a low of minus 5.3 degrees Celsius while Gulmarg, a famous ski resort, recorded a low of minus 3.6 degrees Celsius.
Also, Qazigund, a gateway of Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 2.7 degrees Celsius while Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded minus 2.5 degrees Celsius. Kokernag in South Kashmir recorded a low of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius.
Pertinently, there is no forecast of any significant weather conditions till December 16 while the dry weather is expected till December 7.
Director Meteorological Department (MeT), Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said that the weather would remain generally dry till December 7, adding that generally cloudy weather with the possibility of light rain over a few plains & hilly areas of Jammu division & light rain and snow (higher reaches) over few places of Kashmir division during late evening of 8th to 9th forenoon.
He said that a few places in Jammu division may experience thunder with gusty winds during the 8th evening and night.
However, he said that from December 10 to 14, the weather would remain generally dry, adding that on December 15 & 16, light rain and snow are expected over isolated places. (With KNO inputs)
