IPL 2025: Tournament Resumes On May 17 – Check New Schedule

IPL Auction will take place on November 24 and 25

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 will resume on May 17, with the final now set to take place on June 3. The tournament had been suspended last week due to escalating hostilities between India and Pakistan but is now back on track following a ceasefire agreement between the two nations.

According to the revised schedule, the league will recommence with Royal Challengers Bengaluru taking on Kolkata Knight Riders in Bengaluru. This will be followed by a double-header on May 18, with Rajasthan Royals facing Punjab Kings in Jaipur, and Delhi Capitals squaring off against Gujarat Titans in the national capital.

The BCCI has finalized six venues—Bengaluru, Jaipur, Delhi, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai—for the remaining league matches, while the venues for the playoff games are yet to be confirmed. Notably, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata will not host any league games in the remainder of the season, with BCCI sources attributing Kolkata’s exclusion to the forecast of heavy rain in the coming days.

Punjab Kings are the only franchise that will lose home advantage under the new schedule. They were originally set to host two remaining games in Dharamsala, including a previously called-off match against Delhi Capitals. Both of these fixtures will now be held at Jaipur’s Sawai Man Singh Stadium.

Although the league was initially scheduled to conclude by May 31, the BCCI has extended the season by three days to ease player workloads, limiting double-headers to just two Sundays—May 18 and May 25. There have also been minor changes to some match locations, such as Royal Challengers Bengaluru now playing their final league match at Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium instead of at home.

As for the playoff venues, Hyderabad and Kolkata remain uncertain. If both are ruled out, Ahmedabad is likely to host all four knockout matches, although another city may be chosen to share the hosting duties.

The suspension of the IPL came after a match in Dharamsala was abruptly halted last Thursday amid rising tensions and a drone strike near Pathankot. The official call to pause the tournament came a day later, but following Saturday’s ceasefire announcement, the BCCI began mobilizing franchises to reassemble squads. Teams like Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians have already resumed training, while others are expected to follow by midweek.

However, the availability of foreign players remains uncertain. With many overseas stars returning home during the break, questions loom over their return. Reports suggest that Australian pacers Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc are unlikely to rejoin their IPL squads—RCB and Delhi Capitals respectively—due to injury concerns and preparations for the World Test Championship final against South Africa beginning June 11.
