India: An emerging global power

India

India, with its vast market value, economic strength, effective governance, demographic advantages, growing global leadership, diplomatic clout, and a consistent record of development and progress, along with good relationships with other countries, is what truly establishes India as a global power. Henceforth, India can be a moderator, mediator, and influencer in times of war and world crises.
Achieving power is easy, but resisting the challenges of power is difficult. This is how Indian leadership is proving itself to the world. Compared to neighbouring countries and others, Indian leadership has reached this standard, which is actually helping in the development of the country’s policies both domestically and internationally.
The rise of India as a thriving economic powerhouse and a global economic force is undeniable. In 2024, India is the world’s fifth-largest economy. Importantly, it has grown from a very low base while catering to the world’s second-largest population, and it has not imposed lockdowns like other countries, even amid the conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran. India is also the largest producer of milk globally and a key supplier of essential food grains like rice and wheat, contributing significantly to global food security.
Starting with Made in India products, India ranks among the top automobile producers worldwide, manufacturing over 25 million vehicles annually. The country also leads the generic pharmaceutical market, supplying nearly 20% of the world’s generic medicines, which underscores its importance in global healthcare
India’s role as the world’s biggest marketplace includes trading partners such as the United States, China, the United Arab Emirates, and the European Union. Its services sector, especially information technology and business services, generates over $340 billion in revenue, fuelling further growth. With a burgeoning middle class expected to exceed 500 million by 2030, India offers immense opportunities for global businesses and investors, reinforcing its position at the heart of the international marketplace.
India has a youthful demography engaged in innovation, economic growth, and social progress. Young India is driving a labour market revolution and creating the world’s largest consumer base, making it indispensable in global supply chains and trade. Upholding democratic values, secularism, republicanism, and above all, freedom of religion and speech, is the pluralistic character of India. It conducts one of the largest democratic exercises in the world and demonstrates a commitment to political stability and social harmony despite its vast cultural, linguistic, and religious diversity. This democratic resilience makes India a model for governance and strengthens its credibility as a global leader
Besides these basic principles of constitutional salience, India is militarily and diplomatically disciplined and influential. There is a strong value of institutionalization, as the military does not interfere in civil affairs like in some other nations. With over 1.45 million active personnel and nuclear weapons, India has the world’s largest military force and plays a crucial role in regional and international security. Its strategic location in the Indian Ocean allows it to monitor vital sea lanes essential for global trade and maritime security, giving it significant influence over international security dynamics.
Maintaining diplomatic relationships with over 190 countries, India operates nearly 200 embassies and consulates worldwide. It is also worth noting that India is a member of international forums such as the United Nations, G20, BRICS, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. India’s global diaspora of over 32 million people further strengthens its international ties, facilitating trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
The reason I am narrating all these qualities is because of India’s efficiency and its elaborate, wide scope in every respect. Take, for example, India’s contribution to global peace and humanitarian aid. India has a proud tradition of contributing to global peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts. Since 1948, it has deployed over 250,000 troops to more than 50 United Nations peacekeeping missions in conflict zones such as South Sudan, Lebanon, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. India was also the first to deploy an all-female police unit in a UN mission, highlighting its leadership in inclusive peacekeeping
The country has provided over $3 billion in aid to nations across Africa, Asia, and the Pacific and has led successful evacuation and relief operations in crisis zones, including Ukraine and Turkey. These efforts demonstrate India’s commitment to global humanitarianism and international cooperation.
With all this, India has the power to mediate immediate or worsening crises at the international level. The ongoing confrontation between the USA, Israel, and Iran represents an area where India’s diplomatic influence and economic ties could be instrumental in fostering dialogue and easing hostilities. Because of its friendly policy, historic friendship, and partnership with Iran, the USA, and Israel, along with its non-aligned foreign policy and strong bilateral and multilateral relations with multiple key players, India is uniquely positioned to act as an honest mediator in global conflicts.
Another reason for India’s global recognition is its continued leadership under Narendra Modi. Under his stewardship, India has taken proactive roles in addressing climate change through the International Solar Alliance and has led health cooperation initiatives like Vaccine Maitri, which supplied over 250 million COVID-19 vaccine doses worldwide. Modi’s vision emphasizes India’s responsibility to contribute to global peace, security, and sustainable development.
The best one from India to the world in the present times is scientific achievements. The Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) Chandrayaan-3 mission, which successfully landed near the Moon’s south pole in 2023, showcased India’s capabilities and ambition in space exploration. Such achievements boost India’s reputation as an innovative and technologically advanced nation capable of contributing to global scientific progress.
Hence, India’s huge population, growing economy, stable democracy, military strength, diplomatic ties, and strategic location collectively leverage and empower it to be one of the most influential countries in the world and a highly effective mediator.
