In a tweet, the Home Minister said that several social media users have used platforms to spread baseless rumours about his health and some have even prayed for his demise.

In a statement, he cited his responsibility as Home Minister at this time when the world is dealing with the novel coronavirus pandemic as what has kept him busy. “When this (rumours) was brought to my attention, I thought I would let people enjoy their fantasies which is why I did not respond any earlier.”

Less than an hour after his tweet, Gujarat Police also arrested two people each from Bhavnagar and Ahmedabad for spreading rumours about the Home Minister.

“However, my party workers and lakhs of well-wishers have been expressing concerns for the past two days and I cannot neglect their worries. This is why I want to state clearly today that I am absolutely healthy and not suffering from any illness,” Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement read.

The statement further stated that according to Hindu beliefs, such rumours further strengthen one’s health. “For this reason, I hope that the people indulging in this acts (rumours) leave this nonsense and let me do my work while they do their own,” the Home Minister said.

Union Minister for Textiles and Women and Child Development, Smriti Irani was the first cabinet minister to respond to Home Minister Amit Shah’s tweet. While re-tweeting his statement, Irani wished the home minister longevity.

Union MoS (Independent of charge, PMO) Dr Jitendra Singh also wished the Home Minister good health and hoped that Shah would continue to guide the government.

BJP National President JP Nadda also condemned rumours about the Home Minister’s health. “Spreading such rumours about someone’s health shows the state of mind of some people,” Nadda said in a tweet.
