Hurriyat (G) activist shot dead in Sopore; Militant killed in Achabal

Srinagar, Sep 9: A Hurriyat (G) activist was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Bomai area of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Saturday.

The gunmen, as per reports, fired upon the Hurriyat activist Hakeem ur Rehman Sultani (45), who suffered serious head injuries and was taken to nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

A senior police officer also confirmed the incident and said that they had launched searches to nab the attackers.

Meanwhile, Joint Hurriyat leadership of Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik expressed their extreme shock on the killing.

Condemning the gruesome murder, the Joint Hurriyat said that Hakeem-u-Rehman was released from the jail recently after 20 months of incarceration.

The Joint Hurriyat constituted a high level committee to visit the location and gather details about the gruesome killing of the Hurriyat leader.

The leadership also expressed hearty condolences with the grief stricken family, his widow and five minor daughters.

 

Militant killed in Achabal shootout

Srinagar, Sep 8: A local militant was killed during a brief gunfight in Achabal area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

A police official said that a couple of militants attacked a police picket at Achabal during late Sunday night. However the attack was successfully repulsed by the government forces personnel on duty at the picket.

In the retaliatory action one militant was killed. The weapon of the militant was also recovered from the site of attack.

The slain militant was identified as Bilal Ahmad son of Abdul Ahad Bhat from Tantraypora Yaripora of District Kulgam.

Bilal had joined the militant outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba three months before.

“His involvement was also established in a weapon snatching case earlier. He was involved in carrying out militant attacks on the government forces as well,” the official said.

In the incident, one forces personnel also sustained injuries and was evacuated to the nearby hospital for medical attention. His condition is stated to be stable.

The official said that two vehicles were seized by police from the spot which apparently were used by militants. “We have registered a case and investigation has been taken up,” he said.

Meanwhile, thousands of mourners participated in the last rites of slain militant. Reports said that a large number of people from native village and adjacent areas thronged at Tantraypora and participated in the funeral procession of LeT militant. He was laid to rest amid pro-freedom and pro-Islam slogans.

 

Unknown gunmen kill militant in Hazratbal: Police

Srinagar, Sep 9: A youth was shot dead by unknown gunmen near Naseem Bagh area of Hazratbal in Srinagar city on Saturday afternoon.

Reports said that some unknown gunmen fired upon the youth resulting in his on spot death.

A police spokesman identified the slain youth as Asif Nazir Dar, son of Nazir Ahmad Dar resident of Panzgam Awantipora.

“A pistol was also recovered from the spot,” the spokesman said claiming that Asif was a militant.

“He was active since January 2017. Initially he had joined the Hizb but later got associated with the Esa Fazili group of militants,” the spokesman said adding a case was registered, the investigation initiated, and the body handed over to the legal heirs after completion of legal formalities.

Asif, according to reports, went missing from his home over a year ago and allegedly joined militant outfit Ansar Ghazwatul Hind (AGH).
