Higher reaches receive fresh snowfall, rains lash plains

SRINAGAR, JANUARY 31: The higher reaches of Kashmir Valley received fresh snowfall on Friday, while rain lashed the plains, leading to a dip in temperatures across the region.

Light snowfall was reported from the higher reaches of Gurez Valley, Sonamarg, Gulmarg, Sinthan Top, Pir Ki Gali, and other areas. Independent weather forecaster Aadil Maqbool stated that Gurez recorded 4 inches of snowfall by evening, while Sonamarg received 8 inches. Sinthan Top and Pir Ki Gali accumulated around 3 inches of snow. Light snowfall was also reported from DK Marg, Noorabad Kulgam, and Baltal Pahalgam. Snowfall continued in Gulmarg and surrounding areas when the last reports came in.

Meanwhile, rainfall was recorded in the plains, including Srinagar, leading to a further decline in temperatures. Below-normal temperatures were observed in Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Qazigund, and Kokernag.

According to the Meteorological Department, more snow is expected in the next 24 hours, with light rain and snowfall likely at scattered locations from the evening until the morning of February 1. Partly to generally cloudy weather is forecast for February 2, while on February 3, there is a chance of light rain and snow at isolated places by the evening.

On February 4, light to moderate rain and snow are expected at several locations, while February 5 may see scattered snowfall, mainly in the early morning hours. From February 6 to 8, the weather is predicted to remain generally cloudy.

The Meteorological Department has advised tourists, travelers, and transporters to follow official advisories for safety during this period.
