New Delhi, Oct 8: The BJP won Haryana for a third consecutive time, as counting of votes for the October 5 assembly election was held on Tuesday. In doing so, the saffron party defied an anti-incumbency of 10 years, as well as exit polls, that had projected a massive win for the opposition Congress.

The BJP won 48 seats in the 90-member House; on the other hand, shocked Congress bagged 37 seats and was also leading on one. Three independents and two candidates of the INLD also registered wins.

To ensure security, 30 companies from the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) have been deployed at counting centers, in addition to 12,000 police personnel.

The exit polls for Haryana predicted a clear majority for the Congress. A party or an alliance needs 46 seats to form the government. The Congress and the BJP remained cautious of exit poll predictions and expressed hope for victory.

Incumbent Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini remains the BJP’s CM face. The Congress said any decision on the chief ministerial face will be decided by the party’s high command after considering feedback from all elected legislators.
