New Delhi, Apr 08: In a significant leap towards digital ease and privacy, the central government has introduced a new Aadhaar mobile app that allows citizens to verify and share their Aadhaar details digitally—eliminating the hassle of carrying physical cards or photocopies.
Launched by Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the app was unveiled in the national capital on Tuesday.
Describing the launch as a major tech milestone, Vaishnaw said the app is designed to make Aadhaar verification easier, faster, and more secure.
“New Aadhaar App, Face ID authentication via mobile app. No physical card, no photocopies,” the minister announced in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The app gives users full control over their data, allowing them to share only what’s needed—securely and with their consent.
“With just a tap, users can digitally share only the necessary information, protecting their privacy at every step,” Vaishnaw said.
A key highlight of the app is Face ID authentication, which adds an extra layer of security and makes the verification process seamless. Aadhaar can now be verified simply by scanning a QR code—similar to making a UPI payment.
“Aadhaar verification is now as simple as scanning a UPI QR code. Quick, secure, and no need for paper,” the minister added.
This new system is expected to significantly cut down the need for handing over Aadhaar photocopies at hotels, shops, airports, or during travel.
“No more photocopying Aadhaar at hotel receptions, shops, or transit points,” Vaishnaw said.
Currently in its beta phase, the app has been built with robust privacy safeguards, ensuring that Aadhaar details cannot be forged, altered, or misused. All data sharing occurs only with user permission and through secure channels.
Calling Aadhaar the foundation of numerous government services, Vaishnaw also urged the tech community to explore ways to combine AI and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) to shape a smarter, privacy-first digital future for India.
