Google is Rolling Out Gemini Gems to Gmail, Drive, and Docs

Gemini August Release SS.width 1300

Google is expanding its Gemini Gems—custom AI assistants—to Workspace apps including Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides, and Sheets, allowing users to create or use ready-made AI chatbots without switching between tools.

Pre-built Gems like Writing Editor, Brainstormer, Learning Coach, and Coding Partner are available, while users can also create their own task-specific bots to reduce repetitive prompting, Google said.

These Gems support common functions such as @-mentions and access to files/folders, making collaboration and task automation more efficient.

In a blog post, Google shared examples of how Gems can be used—for instance, a copywriting Gem tailored to specific audiences, or a sales-focused Gem customized with company-specific data. Users can also create assistant Gems aligned with their job roles for personalized summaries and support.

The feature is rolling out in the coming weeks to Google Workspace customers with access to Gemini in the side panel.

Gems, first launched in August 2024, are available to Gemini Business, Advanced, and Enterprise subscribers. Users can create custom Gems at gemini.google.com/gems/create or directly via the “Create a new Gem” option in the Workspace side panel.
