Srinagar: The Department of Community Medicine, Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, in collaboration with Block Hazratbal, organised a World Hypertension Day 2026 programme at UPHC Nishat with active public participation.
The event began with a walkathon aimed at spreading awareness about hypertension, healthy lifestyle practices, and the importance of regular health check-ups in preventing non-communicable diseases.
A screening-cum-awareness camp was later organised for people above 30 years of age. Participants were screened for Blood Pressure (BP), Random Blood Sugar (RBS), Hemoglobin (Hb), and Body Mass Index (BMI). Specialist consultations, lifestyle counselling, and free medicines were also provided.
The programme was attended by Prof. S. Muhammad Salim Khan, Head of the Department of Community Medicine, GMC Srinagar, along with senior faculty members, senior residents, and postgraduate scholars. Senior officials and healthcare staff from Block Hazratbal, including the Block Medical Officer and Medical Officers, also participated in the event.
Speaking on the occasion, the organisers highlighted the need for early diagnosis, regular monitoring, healthy diet, physical activity, and adherence to treatment to prevent complications arising from hypertension, commonly known as the “Silent Killer.”
The organisers appreciated the enthusiastic response from the public and reaffirmed their commitment towards strengthening preventive and promotive healthcare services at the community level.
